It seems to me that I can get very picky about just about everything.
it's not that I'm a princess - it really isn't! It's just that I get caught up with SO MANY options to pick from. This carries over into hula hoops...the selection of hoops can be overwhelming! I want to break things down a bit to help you figure out what would work best for you - to help you find your Goldie Locks Hoop.
First we need to know a few things about you: have you hooped before or is this your first time? what kind of hoop dancing are you into: on body fitness? off body tricks? multi-hoops? performance? Knowing these will help us to figure out if you are looking for a groovy hoop or a lighter poly pro hoop or something more flashy!
Being a hoop maker for over 3 years has taught me a lot about the patience and care that goes into creating THE perfect hoop. The tape selection is the hardest part of the whole process - because I just want them ALL! Each time I order new tape I get so tempted to get every colour or try that new mermaid pattern...really I hope a support group is out there for me! Pssst...wanna know a secret? The colour doesn't matter so much because when you are dancing because as the hoop is spinning you see a blurred version. It's only in rest mode that we can see all the beauty that is your hoop. What is really crucial is the size and weight of your hoop. A good hoop for beginners should be around 2lbs and ideally have some grip or gaffer tape to help give it some friction. Any heavier and you could run into some serious bruising or even injury. So, I steer clear from any weighted hoops which are really too heavy for the hoop moves I bust out anyway! For my fitness hoops I like 3/4 inch PE tubing that comes up to my belly button - around 40 inches in diameter. My fitness hoop offers me so much in the way of building my core and muscle toning. It is a slower hoop compared to a poly pro hoop so it is great for learning new tricks. If you are shopping for your first poly pro hoop you will want to explore tube sizes, types and connections. Poly pro hoops are great for off body tricks, jumps and tosses. They offer more freedom in your dance because they are lighter. They go a lot faster so it's good to test out a poly pro to see the difference. Oh I could totally geek out and get into the finer details of hoop selection! The best way to find your Goldie Locks Hoop is to come see me at a hoop class and get a free personal fitting. A test spin will help us figure out what exact size fits your body and your unique groove. Are you thinking about a hula hoop as a gift for yourself or someone you want to be your hoop buddy? I would love help you find your Goldie Locks hoop to find one that is juuuuust right! With a new hoop dance class series beginning in March, you could find yourself in your perfect hoop this spring!
