This month I hooped it up with some beautiful hoopers in Charlottetown - Robyn of Hoop Bloom had a special workshop for us. It was all about mindfulness and our patterns. We discovered how we have these hoop dance patterns and how they can be broken - and how much freedom we can find in breaking these patterns!
The deepest message I took from this workshop was about the beginner's mindset. The idea is when we take this approach in trying a new trick, new sequence or skill, our minds take on a curiosity and openness. I thought that was so cool.
I've been hooping for 3 years and by no stretch of the imagination do I think I'm advanced...um no...one click on Youtube will shut down that idea fast! I have my my go-to tricks and I feel super skilled when I'm in that flow state just dancing. Well, I got to put this beginner mindset into practice during our workshop.
Here's how it all went down:
Our group was mostly hoopers from my classes (which are starting up again this Fall!) and there was a wonderful new hooper who joined us - literally - new to hooping - We were working on fancy ways to pick up the hoop from the ground and Robyn had us working on the Dirty Pizza Toss. Ugh...I have wanted to nail that trick so bad for so long! Right away I had to shut down my negative and stop reliving my previous experience of failing at that trick. Then out of the corner of my eye I see the new hoop dancer try it out and she totally did a dirty pizza toss...on her first day! I celebrated this trick for her because in my head this trick is impossible! Seeing this new hoop dancer pop up that hoop gave me the motivation to try it like a beginner and just giver'
So I gaver' and I totally did it! My first dirty pizza toss! YESS! I was so excited!
My dirty pizza toss is not perfect - that's so not the point... it was that I became inspired by seeing a beginner nail it so easily that made me want to be a beginner too!
And if you are wondering what in blazes I'm talking about, check this. And start at 1:15 for the move!
